WHAT'S ON THIS CD?
==================

This CD contains the following items:

 - Autorun menu for linking to the resources on this CD
 - Sample files for the book
 - Setup program to install the sample files
 - Electronic versions of the book (eBooks)
	Standalone eBook
	Visual Studio Help eBook
 - Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0

HOW TO USE THE CD
=================

Autorun CD Menu
---------------

To use this companion CD, insert it into your CD-ROM drive. If AutoRun
is not enabled on your computer, run StartCD.exe in the root of the CD to
display the start menu. The menu provides you with links to all the
resources available on the CD, including links for installing the
software you will need to view the files contained on the CD and for
accessing the Microsoft Press product support web site.

Sample files for the book
-------------------------

The source code for the programs discussed in the book is included on this
CD in the \Code folder. To copy the sample files to your hard disk,
use the Autorun CD Menu described in the previous section. Or, run
Setup.exe in the \Setup folder and follow the instructions that
appear on the screen. The samples require about 10 MB of hard disk space.
If your computer runs on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 2000,
or Microsoft Windows XP, you will need Power User or higher privileges to
install the sample files.

The sample files on this companion CD are ordered by chapter. The
setup program that copies the sample files to your hard disk preserves
that order, in the default folder \VisualCSharpNET. For example, if your
CD-ROM drive is accessed through drive F:, you'll find the sample files
for the Animals application on this companion CD at F:\VisualCSharpNET\Chapter02\Animals.

To uninstall the sample files, make the appropriate selection from Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel.

Electronic Books (eBooks) - Standalone eBook and Visual Studio Help eBook
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The complete text of the original print book is contained on this CD in two
fully searchable electronic versions: a stand-alone eBook, and a Visual Studio
Help eBook.

The stand-alone eBook allows you to access the electronic version of the print
book directly from your desktop. The Visual Studio Help eBook allows you to
access the electronic version of the print book only from the Visual
Studio .NET help system. Within Visual Studio Help, you can filter your
search results by all Microsoft Press eBooks, or by individual Microsoft
Press eBook titles.

To install either eBook, use the Autorun CD Menu (see the section "Autorun
CD Menu"). You can also start Autorun.exe in the \eBook folder to install
the stand-alone eBook. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later and the
proper HTML Help components are required to view the stand-alone eBook.
If your computer does not have Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later,
the setup program will offer to install Internet Explorer 5.5 for you. The
setup program has been configured to install the minimum files necessary
to view the eBook, and it will not change your current settings or
associations.

For more information about the stand-alone eBook installation, refer to
the Readme.txt file in the \eBook folder.

To install the Visual Studio Help eBook, run Setup.msi in the \VS_Help_eBook
folder and follow the instructions that appear on the screen. The Visual Studio
Help eBook requires Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
on the target system. Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 has been included on this
companion CD in the \Installer folder. After installing the integrated eBook,
you can filter searches and return results from Microsoft Press eBooks when
using Visual Studio .NET help. To do this, perform the following:

	1. Launch Visual Studio .NET
	2. Within Help, navigate to the Contents pane and select the drop-down
	 	list under "Filtered by:"
	3. Select the eBook title from the drop-down list OR
Select "Microsoft Press eBooks" to receive results from all integrated
	   eBooks that are installed.

NOTE: Visual Studio must be closed when installing or uninstalling the integrated
eBook.

For more information about Windows Installer, refer to the Installer section later
in this Readme file. For more information about the integrated eBook, refer to the
Readme.txt file in the \VS_Help_eBook folder.

If your computer runs on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 2000, or
Microsoft Windows XP, you will need administrative privileges to install the eBooks.
If you do not have administrative privileges and your system has Microsoft Internet
Explorer 5.01 or later, you may view the stand-alone eBook by opening the VCSHARP.chm
file in the \eBook\Is_001 folder.

Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0
-------------------------------

Windows Installer 2.0 must be installed on your computer before running the
MSI Installer to integrate the eBook with your Visual Studio help files.
(If youve previously installed Windows Installer 2.0 or if youre running
Microsoft Windows XP, you dont need to install Windows Installer.) To
install Windows Installer 2.0, use the Autorun CD menu or open the Win20.htm
page in the \Installer folder and click the appropriate link for the operating system
on your computer. In the File Download dialog box, select Run This Program From
Its Current Location and click OK, then follow the instructions that appear.

Troubleshooting
---------------

Long file names on CD and 16-bit CD-ROM drives:

If you have an older, 16-bit CD-ROM drive and you browse this CD, you will
see truncated filenames on folders and files. Contact your CD-ROM drive
manufacturer for information about this issue and for the latest driver
updates.

Manually copying files from CD-ROM

If you manually copy the sample files from CD-ROM to your hard disk, you may
need to remove each file's read-only attribute in order to use the file. To
do so, right-click the file in My Computer or Windows Explorer and click
Properties in the context menu. On the General tab, clear the Read-only
check box in the Attributes section. Click OK.
